Forex Spreads, Commissions and Hidden Fees: What to Compare

Learn why 'zero commission' does not mean zero cost and how to compare spreads, financing, conversions and withdrawal charges.

In brief

The cheapest-looking Forex account is not always the least expensive to use. A broker may quote no dealing commission while earning through spreads, financing charges, or other fees. The useful comparison is total cost under realistic conditions.

Forex account guidance

The cheapest-looking Forex account is not always the least expensive to use. A broker may quote no dealing commission while earning through spreads, financing charges, or other fees. The useful comparison is total cost under realistic conditions.

The spread is a built-in transaction cost

A currency pair often shows a bid price and an ask price. The ask is typically higher; the difference between them is the spread. If you open and immediately close a position with no market movement, the spread usually creates a cost.

Some brokers quote variable spreads that widen during major news, thin trading periods, or reduced liquidity. Comparing a single advertised 'from' spread can therefore be misleading.

Commissions can be separate

An account may charge a commission per side or per round trip in addition to a smaller spread. Another account may charge no explicit commission but a wider spread. Compare both using the same hypothetical position size and the same currency pair.

A label such as 'ECN', 'raw', or 'professional' does not guarantee lower all-in costs or better execution. Look at written schedules and actual trade confirmations.

Watch the other charges

Depending on the broker and product, overnight financing or swap charges can accumulate when a position remains open. Currency conversion, deposit or withdrawal processing, inactivity fees, and account administration can also matter.

  • Ask for the current fee schedule in writing.
  • Compare normal and volatile-market spreads.
  • Check whether withdrawals carry minimums, fees, or delays.
  • Confirm whether financing is charged or credited for overnight positions.

Evaluate cost alongside risk and service

A tiny spread is not valuable if the broker's legal identity is unclear, execution is poor, or withdrawals are obstructed. Cost is only one part of an account comparison.

Never deposit merely to access a temporary 'special spread'. Evaluate the contract first, and remember that even inexpensive trading can produce substantial losses.
