Account opening often involves identity checks commonly referred to as 'Know Your Customer' or KYC. Requirements vary with jurisdiction, product, and company. Understanding why documents are requested—and how they are handled—matters as much as preparing them.

Why a broker may request personal information

Financial firms may need to confirm a client's identity, address, and certain account details to meet applicable legal and compliance requirements. Typical requests can include identification, address evidence, or information about financial circumstances and experience.

There is no universal checklist. The exact requirements should appear in the broker's official onboarding process and privacy notice.

Verify the recipient before sending anything

Begin with the company's legal identity and official website. Be cautious of unexpected requests over social messaging apps, personal email accounts, or links with lookalike domains.

A legitimate-looking request can still be fraudulent if the sender is impersonating a real firm. Contact the company using independently verified details before sharing documents.

  • Use only an official, secure onboarding channel.
  • Check why each document is needed and how long it is retained.
  • Do not send passwords, recovery codes, or one-time authentication codes.
  • Never share full documents in a public chat or comment.

Understand the difference between an ID check and a deposit

Identity verification and depositing trading funds are separate decisions. Completing a KYC questionnaire does not obligate you to deposit. Ask about fees and account rules before making either decision.

If you are asked to send funds to an individual, pay a suspicious 'release fee', or share remote access to your device, stop and verify the request.

Keep a record

Save the relevant agreement, privacy policy, documentation you submitted, and confirmations from official channels. Review how to exercise any rights regarding your personal data in the applicable jurisdiction.

If your information was sent to a suspicious party, contact the relevant provider and follow local fraud-reporting guidance.
